Smoky Quartz - The Power Stone

Updated: Nov 13, 2023

Smoky quartz is a beautiful stone, not just to look at but the overall qualities it offers to those who work with it.

Often mistaken for its sister stone, clear quartz, this pale to dark brown translucent crystal was highly admired and respected by Shamans, Druids, and Royalty. Its association with Hecate, the Greek goddess of magic, herbs, and sorcery, may have had something to do with it. Known by the Druids as "the power stone," smoky quartz was extensively used during sacred ceremonies and rituals.

Sourced throughout Brazil, Madagascar, Germany, and Spain, smoky quartz can also be sourced in the Scottish Highlands and is known in Scotland as their national gem. Scottish artisans began incorporating smoky quartz from the Cairngorm Mountains into shoulder brooches and kilt pins throughout the seventeenth century.

A sphere of smoky quartz in the British Museum is reputed to be the famous 'shew stone' of Dr. John Dee, alchemist, mathematician, astrologer, magician, and court diviner to Queen Elizabeth I of England. A crystal he described was brought to him by Archangel Uriel.

Associated with the root chakra, smoky quartz has been known as an excellent crystal to help remove and heal any blockages in this area. A cheerful stone for grounding oneself, smoky quartz will assist in regaining contact with reality, achieving a more down-to-earth existence.

For those prone to holding onto old emotions, feelings, thoughts, beliefs, or old experiences, a piece of smoky quartz would be beneficial in detoxing and cleansing the mind, leaving stress, anxiety, fear, sadness, and other negative energies behind. Working with smoky quartz will enable one to let go of the past. Releasing what no longer serves us allows new, fresh, positive energy to enter, leaving our mind, body, and spirit vibrating at the highest frequency, leading to emotional calmness.
